I began my career working with children and young people over 15-years ago, when I applied for a job as a care worker in a local children’s home.
Perhaps I was drawn to this because of my own childhood in care. Over the years, in various roles and for different organisations in residential childcare, including 5 years at a therapeutic community for children, I became increasingly interested in how to best help young people who were experiencing emotional and social difficulties, often following very difficult starts in life.
In 2007 I undertook my first training in counselling, of any kind, with a counselling skills course at Wealden Psychology Institute. Following this I studied and read widely on topics such as: attachment theory, transactional analysis, psychodynamic theory and developmental trauma. I integrated this learning into my day-to-day work with young people.
In 2015 I decided I wanted to be able to support a wider range of children and, with a desire to further my development and understanding, began three-years of training in child and adolescent psychotherapeutic counselling at The Institute of Arts in Therapy & Education. I have provided therapy for children and adolescents in schools and for a local counselling service.
Alongside my direct work with children, since 2009, I have extensive experience of devising and facilitating training days and workshops both for my employers and a range of other clients on a freelance basis. I have a PTTLS Level 3, qualifying me to teach in further education and training.
